Following the recent tour of England, T Dilip’s tenure as India’s fielding coach ended after almost five years.

In a recent interview, Dilip talked about how the team’s fielding culture is affected by older players. He underlined how Virat Kohli’s approach helped the team as a whole by fostering a dynamic that enhanced performance.

“You have seen him in the powerplay, how he is as a batsman, whether at cover or short mid-wicket, with his reflexes and with his dives, is admirable,” Dilip said.

How Kohli’s intensity affected the entire fielding unit

In order to honour outstanding fielding accomplishments, the fielding coach established the fielding medal during his tenure. This program was part of India’s plan to recognise not only batting and bowling achievements but also defensive brilliance. The medal recognised individual achievement on the field and underlined the importance of fielding as a core skill within the team’s culture.

“You have seen him in the powerplay, how he is as a batsman, whether at cover or short mid-wicket, with his reflexes and with his dives, is admirable,” T Dilip said of Kohli’s ability to field at cover or short mid-wicket with the same level of excitement.

T Dilip added that the former India captain remained composed even in the latter stages of the innings, when fatigue can set in.

“Even in the most recent series, he was making those dives and was always on the lookout for you. He is the first player to leave the circle when the field is stretched, and even at this point in his career, he rushes from long-on to long-on at either end during the death overs.”

Barbados 2024: The most unforgettable time for T Dilip

One of T Dilip’s most memorable moments was when India won the T20 World Cup in Barbados on June 29, 2024. The fielding improvements he had made while teaching were evident in the competition. Suryakumar Yadav’s crucial catch in the final earned him the Best Fielder Medal, demonstrating the team’s calibre of fielding.

“If I go back to my best moment, I think Barbados 2024, not just the trophy, but the dressing room atmosphere afterward, the silence for a few seconds before it broke,” T Dilip recalled, reflecting on that momentous achievement.

The moment captured the emotional significance of the achievement for the entire squad and coaching staff, as it was the result of years of focused work on fielding excellence.
