The two-time ODI World Cup winners, the West Indies, have been confirmed to compete in the 2027 ODI World Cup Qualifier. With just two ODIs against India left before the September 30, 2026 deadline, the Caribbean team is currently ranked 10th in the ICC ODI rankings. Even a perfect sweep of those games would not be enough to propel them into the top eight.
With the exception of co-hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe, the top eight teams in the ICC ODI rankings on September 30, 2026, will automatically qualify for the 2027 ODI World Cup. Due to their hosting of the competition, South Africa and Zimbabwe are eligible. Afghanistan joined Australia, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, England, and Bangladesh as direct qualifiers after securing their automatic spot following an exciting victory over Ireland in Belfast.
In recent years, the West Indies have had a challenging journey via the qualification process. They were eliminated from the 2025 Champions Trophy, a competition they had last participated in in 2013, after missing direct entry to the 2023 ODI World Cup and finishing fifth at the Super Six stage of that Qualifier. As the other lowest-ranked non-host Full Member at the September 30 deadline, Ireland has been confirmed as the second Full Member going to the Qualifier.
Who will compete in the 2027 ODI World Cup Qualifier and when is it?
The dates of the 2027 ODI World Cup Qualifier are set for February 22–March 23, 2027. The event’s host location has not yet been determined.
There will be ten teams competing in the qualifier. The two lowest-ranked non-host Full Members are Ireland and the West Indies. The four teams that advance from the World Cup Qualifier Playoff and the top four finishers from Cricket World Cup League 2 will join them.
Four countries that advance from the Challenge League and the four teams that finished lowest in CWC League 2 will compete in the Qualifier Playoff. The playoff stage’s format has not yet been decided. Twelve teams make up the Challenge League, which is split into two pools of six. Each pool competes in three round-robin events, and the top two teams from each group move on to the Qualifier Playoff. Associate cricket communities have expressed disapproval of the new pathway structure.
What does the outcome of the qualifier indicate for the West Indies’ chances of winning the World Cup?
The 2027 ODI World Cup second round is directly open to the qualifier winner. Teams who place second, third, or fourth in the Qualifier will advance to the first round of the Super Series, and the top-ranked team from that round will advance to the main tournament’s second round.
The qualifier, which is co-hosted by South Africa and Zimbabwe, is the only path left for the West Indies to qualify for the 2027 ODI World Cup. The two-time winners, who won the trophy in 1975 and 1979, will have to overcome a ten-team battle in order to make a comeback to cricket’s premier 50-over tournament.
