Former India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik has intimated that chief selector Ajit Agarkar and head coach Gautam Gambhir might not agree after India’s dismal Twenty20 International performance in the UK.
India had a dismal tour under interim captain Shreyas Iyer, losing to Ireland 2-0 in the series before England defeated them 4-0 in the five-match Twenty20 International series. Both Gambhir’s poor performance and the tour’s team selection have garnered criticism.
One of the primary subjects of controversy was how Sanju Samson and youthful sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi were treated. After making a mark during the 2026 IPL, it was anticipated that the 15-year-old will make his T20I debut against Ireland. However, Samson maintained his starting position before being benched after three subpar games.
After Sooryavanshi was given a shot but failed to make an impression before being benched for the fifth Twenty20 International against England, Samson was free to return to the team.
The many changes in the starting lineup, according to Dinesh Karthik, raised the possibility that the selection panel and the coach were at odds.
There is some conflict between the head coach and chief selector. Agarkar seems to have long-term goals, while the current coach seems to be stating, “You know, I want to win every game I play.” That’s why we are witnessing this chaos. Is it perfect for the players? On the Sky Sports Cricket Podcast, Karthik stated, “Definitely not.”
He continued by saying that such uncertainty could affect players’ confidence, especially on a team where there is intense competition for slots.
“Just think of your bench strength if you’re from India. Everyone believes that anyone can take my place if I play a few poor games. Additionally, this occurs, which is undoubtedly a problem that India must recognise and address as soon as possible, he continued.
Agarkar and Gambhir may have different objectives when it comes to selecting the team, according to Dinesh Karthik.
“I believe that Agarkar, the chief selector, is looking ahead and wants to see the players in the group.” Gambhir may be thinking, “I want to win every series because my name is on the line,” in the meantime.” Thus, it appears that there may be a clash,” Karthik remarked.
“Friction between the chief selector and head coach Gautam Gambhir regarding team selection are clearly evident. This is not good for the players and the team.”

Given India’s dismal T20I results in the UK, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has already said that it will evaluate the team’s campaign.
