Shaheen Afridi, a pacer from Pakistan, chose to play in the Lanka Premier League after being selected by the Kandy Royals for the season despite not being included in the Test team for the West Indies tour. It’s interesting to note that Shaheen quit the competition in the middle of the LPL after playing a few games.
The Pakistani pacer pulled out of the competition, but if the Kandy Royals made it to the playoffs—which they did—he was supposed to come back. Consequently, the pacer has reportedly returned to the team before the knockout stages, adhering to his previous pledge.
Following a significant debate, Shaheen Afridi returns to the LPL
The left-arm seamer and his national teammates, Hassan Nawaz and Khushdil Shah, are expected to return to their LPL team, the Kandy Royals, according to Geo News. Shaheen had already told the team that he would be withdrawing from the competition for personal reasons, but they had not disclosed the specifics.
It’s interesting to note that he withdrew a few days after being left out of the Kandy Royals’ starting lineup against the Colombo Capitals due to an administrative error.
Shaheen Afridi was listed as one of the impact players for that specific game. But when the Kandy Royals decided to bat first, team management told him that an analyst’s mistake had resulted in his name being omitted from the official squad sheet.
Shaheen brought up the issue with the LPL Anti-Corruption Unit as a result of this incident before bringing it up with the match referee. Although the Pakistani player received an apology from the franchise and organisers, he ultimately withdrew from the competition in the middle.
But now that Kandy has advanced to the playoffs, the return of the Pakistan ODI captain is a huge plus for the side.
It was anticipated that Shaheen would reclaim his Midas touch by playing in the competitive LPL after he was left off of the Test squad. However, the fast bowler had a dismal season before withdrawing from the competition in the middle.
The 26-year-old made six appearances for the Kandy Royals, taking seven wickets at an economy rate of 10.18 and an average of 32.00. In each of the six games he participated in, the batters teased him, making him appear out of his element.
Furthermore, Shaheen Afridi, who was renowned for his speed, saw a decline because his average speed was only about 130 km/h, which hindered his bowling by allowing the batters to adapt to him.
In addition to Shaheen Afridi, the Kandy Royals have signed two other Pakistani stars.
The Kandy Royals will benefit greatly from Shaheen Afridi comeback, but the squad has already signed two of his teammates before the knockout stages.
Three excellent Pakistani players were chosen for the Kandy squad prior to the crucial knockout match, which further improves the team combination. Khushdil Shah and Hassan Nawaz will also join the team.
The three Pakistani players take the position of Moeen Ali, Sediqullah Atal, and Brandon McMullen, who departed the team when their contracts expired.
Although Shaheen Afridi is anticipated to be in the starting lineup, his other two teammates are not. The Royals may not make too many changes to their current starting lineup because the left-arm seamer’s experience might be useful in their upcoming LPL game.
