Former Australian captain Ian Chappell has harshly criticised the squad’s selection choices for the forthcoming game. The team is playing to avoid a series whitewash. After losing the first Test at Darwin by nine wickets, Australia will try to make amends in the second Test against Bangladesh in Mackay on Saturday, August 22.

Chappell has voiced grave reservations regarding the Australian selection panel’s team-building strategy and their capacity to resolve the issues they have caused. According to Chappell, the selectors’ decision-making process has shown a lack of comprehension.

The batting lineup has to be adjusted.

After the Darwin defeat, Chappell has demanded several adjustments to the batting lineup. Jake Weatherald has been cut from the team for the second Test, and Chappell wants to bring back Sam Konstas, who was benched after the West Indies tour. Additionally, Chappell suggests dropping Marnus Labuschagne from the batting order and moving Steve Smith to number three.

Concern has been raised about Labuschagne’s recent performance. During the 2023 Ashes series against England, he scored his final Test century. Since then, Labuschagne has averaged 25.23 with 959 runs, nine fifties, and a top score of 90 across 42 innings. The choice to bat seam-bowling all-rounder Beau Webster at number seven in spite of his impressive first-class record has also drawn criticism from Ian Chappell.

The preparedness of young players chosen for the team has also been questioned by Ian Chappell. Oliver Peake, 19, averages 26 after 14 first-class games, whereas Campbell Kellaway, 23, averages 31.52 after 44 first-class games.

Ian Chappell questioned if these players are currently ready for Test cricket.

Australia will lose the series and lose vital World Test Championship (WTC) points if they fail to win the second Test. Although South Africa and New Zealand are closing in on the Pat Cummins-led team, they are still leading the standings.
