The all-rounder retired after a challenging time with England. It was too “mentally taxing” for him to continue with the “extra responsibilities” of captaining and representing England. He said that he hadn’t decided whether to play international cricket for the previous “six to 12 months,” but he did say he would keep playing for Durham, his county club, and investigate opportunities to join a white-ball franchise.
“I got a fresh lease of life for the game when I was back at Durham and wasn’t playing in the second Test, but I just couldn’t get that feeling back. The next phase of my work excites me much. Stokes was cited by the BBC as stating, “I’m comparing this week to that week when I go back to playing for my boyhood club Durham. Right now, I am buzzing.”
He was relieved at the prospect of being freed from the psychological burden of his duties abroad. Ben Stokes texted Durham head coach Ryan Campbell on Sunday night with the message, “Up the Ds.”

Durham’s head coach, Campbell, expressed hope that Stokes will participate in this summer’s One-Day Cup. Durham will meet Derbyshire in the One-Day Cup competition’s opening round on July 21. Stokes does not presently have a contract to play in The Hundred because he decided not to take part in this season’s auction. Players registered for The Hundred will not be able to represent their counties in the One-Day Cup unless their teams permit them to do so, as the competition starts on the same day.
