Due to a knee injury, England all-rounder Jacob Bethell has withdrew from The Hundred in 2026. The England medical team is awaiting the results of the MRI scan that was performed on the 22-year-old’s right knee on July 20 in order to assess the severity of the injury and the duration of his recuperation.
During England’s most recent ODI series against India, Jacob Bethell sustained the injury.
Despite the setback, he put up a fantastic all-around effort in the third ODI at Lord’s Cricket Ground, helping England win the series 2-1 by hitting 91 runs and taking two wickets. He was supposed to captain Birmingham Phoenix in The Hundred, however he has now been ruled out as a precaution.
Jacob Bethell is currently anticipated to bat at No. 3 in the forthcoming Test series against Pakistan, which starts next month. Over the past year, he has emerged as one of England’s most promising multi-format players. Because his absence would leave a big gap in the middle order and compel the team to reconsider its plans before the series, England will be praying that the injury does not require surgery.
Jacob Bethell, who is thought to be one of England’s future captains, was also anticipated to gain important leadership experience from the Hundred. He is seen as a possible long-term captain and led England in a Twenty20 International series against Ireland last year. Concerns about handling Harry Brook’s workload in all three formats have made Jacob Bethell a viable contender for captaincy duties in the future. Donovan Ferreira will take over as the team’s leader in The Hundred.
On Tuesday, MI London will play Manchester Super Giants in the sixth edition of The Hundred at The Oval. Following the ownership auction, both clubs have new names going into the season. Sanjiv Goenka, who also owns the IPL and SA20 teams of the same name, owns the Manchester Super Giants, while MI London has joined the Ambani family’s worldwide cricket portfolio.
Ben Stokes, a former England cricket player, has once again chosen to play for Durham in the One-Day Cup rather than The Hundred.
