But when the chance presented itself, the Karnataka batsman seized it with both hands and contributed significantly to both innings of the first Test match between India and Sri Lanka at the Galle International Stadium. India won the five-day match by 165 runs on Wednesday, August 19, making it the country’s 600th Test match.
Cricket fans were impressed by Padikkal’s dual-innings performance in his first Test match since November 2024. His strategy demonstrated maturity and an awareness of match circumstances by combining aggression and caution. India’s decisive triumph was largely due to the left-hander’s ability to modify his batting for various stages of the game.
He struck 15 fours and one six in his elegant 167 off 230 balls in the first innings. Dinesh Karthik commended the hit, emphasising its visual appeal, despite only scoring 44 in the second essay.
Padikkal’s opening partnership and first Test century
India was able to take control of the game in the first innings with to Padikkal’s knock, which was based on sound technique and steady stroke-making. When the circumstances called for it, the batsman showed patience and determination by reaching his century off just 134 balls. His performance in the first inning gave the club a strong starting point for their final triumph.
Despite being less than his first-innings total, Padikkal’s second-innings contribution of 44 runs had the same qualities of poise and grace that Karthik noted.
