The team is already preparing for the 2027 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in India, according to Australia’s head coach Andrew McDonald. It is anticipated that a number of Test contenders would begin acclimating to subcontinental conditions long before the visit.

Australia’s longest Test journey to India in nearly fifty years will take place during a five-match series from January 21 to March 3, 2027. Unlike previous overseas trips, the visitors are not expected to play a warm-up match before the series.

Instead, Cricket Australia is investigating the possibility of holding a pre-series training camp, either in India or at a neutral venue, to assist players in adjusting to the circumstances prior to the high-profile encounter.

According to Andrew McDonald , players who are not expected to feature in Australia’s next home Test series against New Zealand can begin preparing for the India tour before the team as a whole. Some players would even skip part of the Big Bash League (BBL) in order to focus on getting ready for the challenging situation.

Australia is also considering practicing on specifically chosen turning surfaces in local conditions, much like they did before their 2023 visit to India.

In an interview with cricket.com.au, Andrew McDonald explained the team’s planning process, saying, “We feel as though we’ve got enough time to immerse ourselves in those conditions.” We’re not going to play a practice game. It will simply be more focused on the area. There are a few possibilities available to us. We’ve already visited the United Arab Emirates and Bangalore, India, so we’re just figuring out how we would handle the people there.

Players like Matthew Kuhnemann, Todd Murphy, Cooper Connolly, Peter Handscomb, and Matthew Renshaw are among those who could be considered for the India series, but Andrew McDonald pointed out that the selection picture could change dramatically because Australia is scheduled to play nine Test matches before the tour.

“A lot of that would happen on the back of the four Tests against New Zealand, seeing where players are at,” Andrew McDonald said.

It won’t always be the team that finishes the Test series (against NZ) that travels to India because we may have some different players with different skill sets that we think can perform there.”

The significance of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which will be held in Nagpur on January 21, 2027, is highlighted by Australia’s preparations. The outcome of the five-Test series is expected to be significantly impacted by the challenging circumstances in India.
