This year has been somewhat unpredictable for Suryakumar Yadav. He became a father, guided India to the 2026 T20 World Cup, lost his spot in the Indian squad, and is now believed to be departing the Mumbai Indians before IPL 2027.
The 35-year-old had a difficult IPL 2026 season, averaging 20.77 and scoring just 270 runs in 13 innings. There are rumours in the dressing room that the management wants to let SKY go before the 2027 Indian Premier League. The right-handed hitter is eager for the forthcoming domestic season and is still honing his fundamentals.
Suryakumar Yadav is most likely to play for Mumbai in October thru the Ranji Trophy, followed by the Vijay Hazare Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. The 2018 domestic season will begin later in August.
SKY is still an important part of Mumbai even tho it is no longer part of India’s plans. He has also stated that he would like to captain the side in the most recent events. When journalist Makarand Waingankar addressed Suryakumar Yadav about governing Mumbai, he said, “Anything for Mumbai.”
It’s interesting to note that Ajinkya Rahane has declared his retirement from all cricket. Last year, the team was led by Shreyas Iyer and Shardul Thakur. Iyer is unlikely to be a fixture in the forthcoming domestic season now that he is India’s new T20I captain.
As a result, it gives Suryakumar Yadav the opportunity to lead Mumbai and argue for a return to international competition.
The Captaincy Record of Suryakumar Yadav
In November 2023, Suryakumar Yadav took over for an injured Hardik Pandya as India’s first T20I captain. The team defeated Australia 4-1 in that series. Gautam Gambhir eventually arrived in 2024 and named SKY the team’s permanent captain.
SKY led India in 52 Twenty20 Internationals over the two-year cycle, winning 40 games and losing just 8. SKY had a 76.9% win percentage at the end of his tenure.
In five games, the 35-year-old captained the Mumbai Indians to two victories and three defeats. Regarding the domestic circuit, he has previously led Mumbai in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (T20), the Ranji Trophy (First-Class), and the Vijay Hazare Trophy (List A).
Therefore, Suryakumar Yadav has a strong case, and it won’t come as a surprise if MCA selects him to be the future captain of Mumbai.
Is Suryakumar Yadav Still Able to Return to India?
For Team India, the post-Suryakumar Yadav era has gotten off to the worst conceivable start. Since the 2026 T20 World Cup, Shreyas Iyer’s team has played ten Twenty20 Internationals, winning just three of them—that too against Zimbabwe.
After India’s tour of the UK ended with just one T20I victory, the BCCI began considering SKY’s return. Suryakumar Yadav still has a chance to make his T20I comeback because the BCCI hasn’t completely ruled him out of contention, according to a report by Times Now journalist Karishma Singh. One requirement, but, is that the batter must excel both for his IPL team and on the local circuit.
