Scott Edwards resigned as captain of the Netherlands ODI squad on July 31, 2026, after the ICC Cricket World Cup League 2’s Utrecht leg. Bas de Leede, his replacement, will serve as the team’s captain for the remainder of the tournament.
The 29-year-old replaced Pieter Seelaar as ODI skipper during the first match of England’s tour of the Netherlands in June 2022. He led the squad in 56 ODIs, winning 24 and losing 29.
Scott Edwards told his teammates about the choice at the end of the Utrecht games.
“I apologise for kind of surprising you all with this. In reality, I’m leaving my position as captain at this point. According to Scott Edwards, who was cited by Cricinfo, “I think, yeah, it’s sort of something Cookie [Ryan Cook, the head coach until June 25] and I have been speaking about and I’ve been speaking to a few different people about it, and this is sort of the time that feels right for me.”
Two of his most notable results at the 2023 ODI World Cup were victories over Bangladesh in Kolkata and South Africa in Dharamsala. In 50 of his 86 T20 international games, including wins over South Africa and Zimbabwe at the 2022 T20 World Cup, Scott Edwards captained the Netherlands. The victory over them in that tournament led to South Africa’s elimination.
The wicketkeeper-batter has now been replaced by De Leede, who is without a doubt the best player in the Netherlands. The 26-year-old took over as ODI captain after realising Edwards’s importance to the team. “It doesn’t just set the team up for success, but it sets individuals up for success,” he said.
And for a man to be so altruistic as to put others in the best possible position to perform, I believe we should all be extremely grateful. It is really f*****g unique. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for you as a player. De Leede remarked, “I think you’re a very special player and I can’t wait to lead you on the pitch.”
