Sai Sudharsan, a promising batsman, was one prominent absence from the travelling team. Concerns regarding his fitness and availability for the first Test have been raised by his absence.
In preparation for the forthcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka, Team India has left for Colombo. The series is significant because it is a component of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC 2025-27 cycle).
Following dismal outcomes in their prior Test assignments, both Sri Lanka and India would be keen to improve their standing in the WTC rankings.
Sai Sudharsan will not be visiting Sri Lanka with the Indian squad.
Sai Sudharsan did not travel with the Indian team as they departed for Sri Lanka, according to RevSportz. Because his nomination was contingent upon fitness clearance, Cricbuzz had previously stated that there was ambiguity around his departure.
According to the article, if the left-handed hitter did not originally travel with the team, people close to him were still certain that he would join the club later this week.
However, it’s unclear if Sai Sudharsan, whose selection was contingent on fitness clearance, will accompany the team on Tuesday. According to a Cricbuzz article, “sources close to the left-hander remain confident that he will join the team, if not on Tuesday, then later this week.”
It’s crucial to remember that Sai Sudharsan is recuperating from a toe injury. The type of injuries was initially kept a secret. The 24-year-old is reportedly making consistent progress and should soon return to full health, though.
Sudharsan is currently receiving rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE). He has started batting again, but the medical team has not yet given him the all-clear to join the Indian team. Consequently, he stays in India while the rest of the team departs for Colombo.
Notably, prior to the start of the IND vs. SL Test series, India will play a three-day warm-up match. The NCC Ground in Colombo will host the practice match on 7 August. Sudharsan might skip the warm-up match given his present state of recuperation. That does not, however, automatically exclude him from the first test.
According to reports, he is anticipated to join the Indian team by August 9, 2026, later this week. He still has time to recuperate and demonstrate his match fitness because the first Test match against Sri Lanka starts on August 15.
However, there has been no formal confirmation that he will be available for the first game of the series.
Why Does India Want Sai Sudharsan Back?
It is significant to note that because the young left-hander has not yet established himself at the international level, Sai Sudharsan’s status in the Indian Test squad has frequently been questioned.
He has amassed 383 runs in 12 innings thus far. Consequently, there were debates regarding whether he should have remained in the starting lineup.
However, the 24-year-old’s outstanding performance for India A during their June tour of Sri Lanka hushed many of his detractors. In just four innings, he scored 332 runs at an incredible average of 110.67, including two hundreds.
Gautam Gambhir and company will therefore be encouraged by his consistent injury recoveries and hope he is well enough to play in the Test series.
