Ben Stokes, a former all-rounder, has expressed his desire to become England’s coach in the future in light of the conversations around coaching and transitions after retirement. Notably, Stokes shocked everyone by announcing his retirement from international cricket during the third Test match against New Zealand in June.
Brendon McCullum resigned from his position with the Test team as a result of the star cricketer’s decision. The all-rounder, who is playing for Durham in the One-Day Cup right now, also disclosed that he has been getting ready to get his coaching certification before ending his career.
Ben Stokes wishes Joe Root the best of luck.
In order to fill the void left by Ben Stokes ‘ retirement, England once again looked to Joe Root, designating the legendary batsman as captain of the team. From 2017 to 2022, Root led England in the longest format.
He resigned after disclosing the “toll” it took on him during a difficult time during the Covid-19 pandemic. Stephen Fleming, the coach of the Chennai Super Kings and former captain of New Zealand, will join him before England’s tour of South Africa in December. Nonetheless, McCullum will continue to oversee the white-ball teams.
Although Ben Stokes has supported Root for the position, he has shown concern for his former teammate and close friend, saying that he knew what Root was going through during his first stint as captain and does not want it to happen again. Additionally, he supported Root’s successful collaboration with Fleming, with whom Stokes collaborated at the Super Kings in 2024.
Ben Stokes also questioned why Harry Brook, the team’s vice captain, was not chosen to be the Test captain. Before the Ashes in the winter of 2025, Brook, who is in charge of the white-ball teams, was appointed vice-captain.
However, after Ben Stokes missed the second Test match against New Zealand due to a brawl at a bar, Brook was neglected. In October 2025, while on a white-ball tour in Wellington, Brook got into an altercation with a nightclub bouncer that ultimately led to Root taking over for that game.
The next Test match for England will be a three-match series against Pakistan, which will start at Headingley on August 19. During the series, the club will be temporarily led by assistant coach Marcus Trescothick.
