Andrew Flintoff has announced his resignation after nearly two years as the England Lions’ captain. The 47-year-old took over as the Lions program’s captain in September 2024 after resuming cricket. As he prepares to embark on a new coaching challenge with Sydney Thunder in Australia’s Big Bash League later this year, he is departing.

Flintoff worked for the England and Wales Cricket Board in a variety of capacities.

He worked with England’s senior white-ball coaching staff and supported the backroom team for the 2024 T20 World Cup. He coached the Northern Superchargers in the Hundred tournament for two seasons before joining the Lions.

“Unfortunately, I’ve decided to leave my position with the Lions. According to Lancashire Post, Flintoff said, “I have not only enjoyed working with the best young cricketers in the country, but I have taken great pride in seeing them develop.”

“I want to express my gratitude to the coaches and staff for their dedication, hard work, and daily support. Specifically, Rob (Key) for entrusting me with one of the most significant responsibilities in English cricket, and Ed Barney, who I have enjoyed working with and was really fortunate to have as a performance director. He continued, “I’m excited to start with the Thunder later in the season and see where coaching takes me.”

Ed Barney, the ECB men’s performance director, highlighted Flintoff’s impact on the environment’s development of young players and commended his dedication to the Lions program. Barney noted that coaches at various stages of their careers had benefited from working with Flintoff during his time.

“Fred has contributed to the transformation of the Lions environment into a program that has significantly impacted young players. He has contributed to the development of a new generation of young players by fostering an atmosphere that constantly encourages and demands excellence.

Whether they are new to teaching or have decades of experience, coaches have thrived alongside him, and he has continuously maximised the group’s skills. We hope he succeeds in the next phase of his coaching career and eagerly await his return to the English game.” Barney stated

Mike Yardy will captain the England Lions in their four-day Professional County Club Select XI match against Pakistan, which begins at Beckenham on August 12. The instant transformation that took place once Flintoff left the position is symbolised by this game.
