Zaheer Khan has backed Mohammed Shami’s selection for India’s 2027 ODI World Cup squad, emphasising the value of the veteran pacer’s experience and present local output. Shami’s local cricket performances have drawn attention from commentators and former players as India prepares for the competition in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.

Zaheer Khan believes that when a player succeeds at the level Shami has shown, he should be given consideration for the national team. Khan underlined the importance of having an experienced bowler prepared for the World Cup campaign, particularly in light of the expected conditions in South Africa.

“Someone should undoubtedly be a part of Team India’s strategy when they do this well. MyKhel cited Zaheer Khan as saying, “He should play the World Cup and be a part of the team.”

“If Mohammed Shami is fit and available, India should take an experienced bowler like him to South Africa.” , he said.

Shami’s World Cup and domestic performances

Shami’s current form is highlighted by his domestic record from the previous season. He took 15 wickets in seven Vijay Hazare Trophy games and 37 wickets in seven Ranji Trophy games, demonstrating his steady performance at the first-class and List A levels.

Shami’s World Cup experience supports Zaheer Khan’s claim.

At the 2023 ODI World Cup, Shami finished as India’s top wicket-taker with 24 wickets, an amazing feat that showed he could perform on a global scale when called upon.

Badruddin says Shami is ready for South Africa.

Mohammed Badruddin, Shami’s childhood coach, has also expressed confidence in the pacer’s readiness. According to Badruddin, Shami is still capable of making the most significant contribution and is prepared to serve the country if needed.

Badruddin emphasised the particular challenges of bowling in South Africa, stating that prior experience in such environments is crucial. “It is not easy to bowl in South Africa,” he said. Badruddin stated, “You need experience there,” highlighting the potential value of an experienced bowler like Shami.

Zaheer Khan advised Shami to focus on what he can control, which is to contribute with the ball whenever he plays.

Khan stated, “He has to just look at how he can contribute and do what’s within his control,” implying that steady domestic results continue to be the route to international selection.
