The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has announced that wicketkeeper-batter Litton Das will be the new ODI captain of Bangladesh.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz, a brilliant all-rounder who has been the team’s captain since June 2025, is replaced by Litton Das. The 31-year-old is currently captain of Bangladesh’s T20I team; in the new ODI position, he is captain of both white-ball teams.
Following a historic series victory over Australia at home—the first time they had defeated the formidable Aussies—Bangladesh was defeated 2-1 in Zimbabwe in their most recent ODI match. Bangladesh has participated in 24 ODIs under Miraz’s leadership, winning 10 and losing 13.
He also managed home series wins against Pakistan, the West Indies, and New Zealand. Before the defeat to Zimbabwe ultimately resulted in his removal from the leadership position, Bangladesh won four straight series under the all-rounder.
In contrast to having a distinct captain for each format, BCB President Tamim Iqbal had previously explained that the board will be moving forward with the nomination of a single white-ball captain and a single red-ball captain.
“In all three configurations, we had three captains. The board and I both think that having two captains is the best course of action. We believe that having two captains—one for white-ball cricket and one for red-ball cricket—makes more sense, but there is no right or wrong to either strategy.
For this reason, Litton Das will be the white-ball captain, and Najmul Hossain Shanto will be the red-ball captain.
The red-ball vice-captain [Miraz] will not change, but Towhid Hridoy will be the white-ball vice-captain. Additionally, we thought it made more sense to have two captains for each of the three formats rather than three. We might even go toward having a single captain for all formats in the future,” Tamim stated during a news conference, as reported by Cricbuzz.
Litton Das now assumes the position full-time after filling in as the team’s captain in seven ODIs in the past, recording three victories and three losses.
