Shubman Gill will continue to lead India’s Test team for the two-match series against Sri Lanka beginning on Saturday, August 15. The rookie captain has effectively handled the early phases of his tenure since taking over when Rohit Sharma withdrew from the game. After recuperating from an injury scare during a warm-up game, Gill is ready for the first Test in Galle.
Matthew Hayden, a former Australian opener and batting coach for the Gujarat Titans during the 2026 Indian Premier League season, has assessed Gill’s readiness for the Test captaincy role. “I suppose in many ways India as a cricketing nation has also had a brilliant captain in Shubman Gill,” Hayden said after working closely with the young hitter during the team’s championship run. India Today cited Hayden as saying, “He has many challenges to face, none of which are more important than the survival of Test match cricket.”
Hayden’s assessment on Shubman Gill captaincy challenge
Hayden’s assessment indicates that India’s Test cricket requires several sorts of care. Although India is excellent in shorter forms, the longer game demands more work, according to the former opener. According to Hayden, most cricketing nations have similar challenges in managing resources across all formats while sustaining Test cricket excellence.
“And I feel India are in a much better position to continue their winning ways in the short formats, 50-over in particular, and T20 cricket, and they do have some work to do as most nations do in and around their Test and longer formats,” Matthew stated.
Shubman Gill was named captain before his historic Test tour of England in June and August of 2025, where he demonstrated both technical skill and leadership ability. His hiring demonstrated the team management’s confidence in his ability to guide India during a challenging Test cricket time. Hayden’s backing has enhanced the broader support Gill has received since taking the job.
“So I’m sure Shubman Gill will be up to that challenge.” He is a fantastic young man and an excellent leader, and he has a strong squad surrounding him, even tho they will need to include both younger and more seasoned players. However, they still have work to do before the World Test Championship final in June of the following year,” Hayden stated.
