Following the upholding of misconduct charges against him by an independent disciplinary panel, Middlesex’s chief executive, Andrew Cornish, was fired. In a statement, the club acknowledged that Cornish left his position as CEO in June. The termination brings an end to a tumultuous process that started months ago when accusations regarding his behaviour at work emerged.
In November, the Guardian first disclosed that Cornish had taken a leave of absence in response to a staff complaint that was forwarded to the Cricket Regulator regarding his alleged actions toward a colleague.
The Regulator is the impartial organization in charge of managing disciplinary issues in English cricket. Following an investigation, the Regulator accused Cornish of misconduct and brought the case before the three-person Cricket Disciplinary Panel, which finally found against him.
The accusations were not reported to police authorities and do not have criminal implications. Cornish is seeking legal action after rejecting the findings.
What does this signify for the leadership of Middlesex?
Another chapter in the club’s turbulent leadership history has begun with Cornish’s departure. Before taking over as CEO in 2021, the former Somerset CEO began working at Middlesex in September 2020 as a consultant offering long-term strategy advice. His tenure at Somerset came to an end when the team fired him in 2019 due to poor financial results. He oversaw a challenging time at Middlesex that included significant financial strains and persistent legal issues.
Who is taking up the position?
In recent months, the club has engaged two temporary CEOs to oversee operations: Julie Harrington, the former head of British Cycling, who is being considered as a permanent successor, and Mahdi Choudhury, the chief operational officer of the MCC. Harrington, who assumed the temporary role on July 20, has extensive experience in sports administration from her prior positions as the head of British Cycling and the British Horseracing Authority. On July 29, club members will meet with Harrington during a Members’ Forum.
Since its founding in 1864, Middlesex has won numerous important awards and has a long history. Among the legendary players from England who have represented this team are Andrew Strauss, Eoin Morgan, and Mark Ramprakash.
