In India’s opening Test match against Sri Lanka in Galle, Manav Suthar achieved his first 10-wicket haul in Test cricket. The left-arm orthodox spinner finished with a total of 10/131, taking four wickets in the first innings and 6/55 in the second. Just minutes before severe rain may have changed the result and given Sri Lanka a lifeline, India won the match by 165 runs on the fifth day.

Suthar’s performance occurred in just his second Test match.

In June, he made his Test debut in New Chandigarh against Afghanistan, where he won Player of the Match and took seven wickets. He became the youngest Indian to take ten wickets away from home at the age of 24 years and 16 days.

In just their second Test match, Suthar is just the fourth Indian to take ten wickets.

He becomes a member of this restricted group alongside Axar Patel, Laxman Sivaramakrishnan, and Narendra Hirwani. Hirwani, who took 16 wickets in his debut against the West Indies in Chennai in 1988, is still the fastest to reach the milestone.

The peer group and historic milestone

In order to succeed at Galle, the young spinner highlighted the value of perseverance and collaboration. He discussed his discussions with experienced spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja during the game, emphasising how their combined style influenced the bowling strategy.

Cooperation and patience in the bowling assault

Suthar considered the importance of winning the series’ first game and the boost it gave the team. Strong individual performances and team victories at the beginning of a series gave players confidence for the remaining games.

With this victory at Galle, India gained a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. Additionally, the victory was India’s 600th Test match. Suthar is currently among the Indian spinners who have taken ten wickets in a match against Sri Lanka, along with Anil Kumble, Harbhajan Singh, and Ravichandran Ashwin.
