Jonathan Trott, a former England batsman and head coach of Afghanistan’s men’s cricket team, has been engaged by the Ireland men’s squad as a temporary consultant beginning next week.
Between 2007 and 2015, the 45-year-old, a renowned top-order batsman, represented England Men in 52 Tests, 68 One-Day Internationals, and seven Twenty20 Internationals. He was named head coach of the Afghanistan men’s cricket team in 2022 and served in that position until February 2026.
However, prior to his deployment to Afghanistan, Jonathan Trott worked as a coach.
He previously worked as an assistant coach at Warwickshire, coached Kent and Scotland, and coached England’s Under-19 Men at the 2017 ICC Under-19 World Cup.
His primary responsibilities during his 14-day stint as a consultant will be to aid the Ireland Men’s squad with series preparations and to provide matchday assistance during the ODI series against Afghanistan.
Jonathan Trott recent association with Afghanistan, according to Graeme West, Director of High Performance at Cricket Ireland, will help Ireland prepare for the series, which he views as an excellent preparation for the ODI World Cup Qualifiers in early 2027.
“The upcoming One-Day International series against Afghanistan is vital to the Ireland Men’s squad’s preparation for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier in early 2027. “This is a unique opportunity to bring a world-class coach into the senior team environment, bringing a wealth of current knowledge about the opposition,” West said in an official statement made by Cricket Ireland.
“Having worked with the Afghanistan squad, Jonathan Trott is perfectly positioned to support our strategic planning for the series, giving our players and staff a fresh perspective and expanding their skills, knowledge, and understanding of 50-over cricket.
“Jonathan Trott worth goes beyond player development; once in the training camp, he will be able to share his extensive leadership expertise with the coaching staff, outlining his philosophy of working with world-class players and his methods for managing an international squad,” he said.
The first ODI is scheduled for Wednesday, August 5, at the Bready Cricket Club in Bready, Northern Ireland. The second one-day international will be played on August 7 at the same venue. The Civil Service Cricket Club in Belfast will host the final three ODIs on August 10, 12, and 14. This is Ireland’s first challenge after their historic 2-0 triumph over India in the T20I series last month.
