Jake Weatherald has signed a county championship deal with Warwickshire for the 2027 season. The 31-year-old will spend the first half of the season at Edgbaston; the club announced the signing on August 19.
Weatherald had a difficult week on the international front previous to the transaction. After scoring 0 and 23 in an unexpected loss to Bangladesh, he was pulled from Australia’s Test squad. His current Test average across six games is 20.36. Matt Renshaw will take his place as opener in the second Test in Mackay, facing Travis Head.
When he arrives at Edgbaston, Weatherald will bring impressive county credentials.
In 2026 for Leicestershire, he made 483 runs at an average of 60.37 in nine innings. He is excited to join Warwickshire for the 2027 season. Edgbaston is one of the best cricket venues in the world, and the chance to represent such a prestigious county was one I couldn’t pass up. I had a great time playing in England this year, so the opportunity to join the Bears ahead of the Ashes is very exciting.
Weatherald stated in an official statement that he is excited to contribute both on and off the pitch to Warwickshire, which has a rich history and a great squad. He also mentioned Jake, a player he has long respected. “He is a proven performer who has scored heavily at the highest level and adds strength to the top of the order,” Warwickshire Director of Cricket James Thomas said in a statement.
Beau Webster, an all-rounder who described the club as his “second home” during his initial visit earlier this year, is another player the Club intends to re-sign for next season.
Will Young of New Zealand and Manav Suthar, an Indian left-arm spinner who will join the team after the current Test series against Sri Lanka, are their overseas recruits for the remainder of the 2026 County Championship season. They play Sussex, who are presently third in Division One, on August 20 at Edgbaston.
