Due to the Gujarat Titans’ (GT) refusal to grant him captaincy, star all-rounder Hardik Pandya‘s attempt to return to the team was unsuccessful. Prior to the IPL 2027 trading window, talks between Pandya’s side and the team broke out over the captaincy demand.
Following a challenging IPL 2026 campaign, Hardik Pandy status with the Mumbai Indians has been under intense scrutiny. MI finished ninth in the standings, won just four of its 14 games, and went six seasons without winning a championship. The team’s overall performance was equally lacklustre: Allah Ghazanfar ended 14th among wicket-takers while Ryan Rickelton finished 17th among run-getters. No MI player was seriously considered for either the Orange Cap or the Purple Cap.
Afterward, Hardik Pandy representative denied that the all-rounder had participated in any direct conversations.
Why was Hardik Pandy leadership condition rejected by GT?
The leadership structure of Indian cricket now revolves around Shubman Gill. Prior to the 2027 World Cup, he was appointed captain of the ODI team in addition to leading India in Test cricket. For the GT management, it was never feasible to ask the team to remove him from the same position at the club level.
The Gujarat-based team was willing to evaluate a deal solely on the basis of cricket, but giving Hardik Pandy the captaincy again would have meant removing a leader who is in charge of both the team and the country. The franchise’s stance was unwavering once that requirement was made, and no more talks took place.
This scenario is set against the backdrop of Hardik Pandy trip via both franchises. After being let go by MI in 2022, he joined GT and helped them win the IPL in their first season. In 2023, GT came in second. Before the 2024 season, he returned to MI and succeeded Rohit Sharma as captain.
MI was near the bottom of the table at the end of that first campaign, and Pandya was subjected to persistent animosity from home crowd members. Although there was some respite in 2025 due to a slight improvement, the 2026 season largely undid any progress.
