Former Indian bowler Karsan Ghavri advised Jasprit Bumrah to take a long break—up to a year—to thoroughly recuperate.
Jasprit Bumrah will not be taking part in India’s Test visit to Sri Lanka due to a left knee ailment. The two-match series, which is part of the World Test Championship, will begin in Galle on August 15. Jasprit Bumrah, 31, returned to ODI cricket against England after being absent from the 50-over game for 968 days. Since the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, Jasprit Bumrah has struggled with injuries.
The pacer participated in two ODI matches against England, but he was unable to play in the most recent game due to knee pain. He sustained the injury in July while fielding in an ODI against England in Cardiff.
After being added to the Sri Lankan squad awaiting a fitness test, Jasprit Bumrah is currently undergoing rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. In an attempt to speed up the healing process, his medical staff gave him an injection last month. Auqib Nabi will take over for him on the tour.
“Bumrah needs to take a five- to six-month or perhaps a year-long vacation before returning to full fitness. The problem is that he enters competitions even though he is only partially fit, and because of workload management, he breaks down halfway through. This is not required. He should only be added to the team if he can handle his workload during a tournament, Ghavri told the Mid-day.
Ghavri’s recommendation to spend extra time off
Ghavri begged the selectors to include seasoned seamers like Mohammed Shami and Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the national team. “Shami and Bhuvi have been playing consistently in the IPL without injuries and should return to the national set-up,” he added, adding that Bumrah’s sporadic absence from a series is worrying for the Men in Blue.
They should be taken into account by selectors. Bumrah has been intermittent during the past two to three years, but all fast bowlers experience niggles or injuries. He hasn’t really played a whole series. Ghavri stated, “That’s not a good sign for him or the country.”
Kulkarni Raju: Jasprit Bumrah can’t play every format, in my opinion.
Another former Indian speedster, Raju Kulkarni, believes the Indian team management should only permit Bumrah to play in Tests, even if the right-arm seamer insists on playing in all three formats. Furthermore, he thought that if Bhuvneshwar Kumar was inserted in T20Is and Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj were rotated in Test matches, Bumrah would be under less strain.
“I don’t think Bumrah can continue to play every format. Since Tests are a crucial format, the club management should think about playing him exclusively in such games. It’s not feasible, even though he might want to play ODIs, T20Is, and IPL.
Because of this, it would be fantastic if seasoned pacers like Shami and Bhuvi could support Mohammed Siraj.” “Bhuvi should be used in T20Is because he’s done brilliantly in the IPL,” stated Kulkarni. Additionally, Shami and Siraj can switch places during tests. Bumrah will be under less strain as a result,” he continued.
