On Thursday, September 3, 2026, India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir, chairman of the senior selection committee Ajit Agarkar, and head of the Center of Excellence VVS Laxman were called to the BCCI’s Mumbai headquarters to conduct a thorough evaluation of the national team’s recent overseas achievements. The meeting, which was confirmed on Wednesday, September 2, will also look at how the board is managing player fitness in preparation for future assignments.

The review was prompted by India’s performance on the road in the months prior. The team’s two-match T20I series in Ireland ended in a 2-0 loss in June 2026, breaking the reigning T20 World Cup champions’ nearly three-year record of 16 straight unbeaten series. The subsequent journey to England made problems worse: India lost the ODI series 2-1 after losing the five-match T20I series 4-0, including a 125-run defeat in Nottingham.

Following the defeats by England and Ireland, board secretary Devajit Saikia had indicated that a formal review would take place; however, the meeting was not called right away, and the reasons for the delay have not been disclosed.

Why is the meeting’s main focus on player injury management?

It is anticipated that task management and fitness would take up a large amount of the conversation. After a number of players missed important trips, the board and the Center of Excellence came under fire. Washington Sundar was also unable to participate in the Sri Lanka tour due to Bumrah’s worsening left knee injury, while Sai Sudharsan’s recuperation from his own setback took longer than anticipated.

The fact that the selection committee was allegedly notified at least once that Bumrah was unsuited for a planned tour is an especially concerning aspect. Concerned that players are not always available at full fitness when international assignments start, the team management has also brought up the IPL workload issue with the board.

The forthcoming T20I series against Afghanistan highlights the importance of fitness. On September 9, Bumrah, Sundar, Nitish Kumar Reddy, and Harshit Rana are all expected to take fitness tests; their team positions are still up in the air.

The selection committee wants Hardik Pandya to be healthy for the 2027 World Cup, but he can currently only bowl five or six overs per match in ODIs, so his long-term availability will also be on the menu.

Before the AGM, what structural issues surround Agarkar and Laxman?

There is a great deal of administrative uncertainty around the September 3 meeting. The BCCI is anticipated to use the time leading up to its Annual General Meeting on September 18, 2026, to decide on the form of the selection structure for the upcoming World Cup cycle. Agarkar’s contract as top selector is set to expire in September 2026. There are different stories regarding whether Agarkar is replaced or given an extension.

Laxman’s situation is being actively considered as well. Although no appointment has been confirmed and the exact nature of any such function is still unknown, reports have indicated that he is being considered for a newly created BCCI Director of Cricket position that would expand his existing Center of Excellence brief.

All three of the officials present at the meeting on Thursday have the 2027 World Cup and India’s tour of New Zealand later in 2026 as their immediate planning priorities.
