Dinesh Karthik claims that Andy Flower is ineligible to be England’s next Test coach due to his ongoing participation with franchise cricket across the globe. Leading the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the London Spirit in The Hundred are two examples of this.
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is reportedly considering Flower to succeed Brendon McCullum as Test coach. The Telegraph also claims that in order to accommodate Flower’s IPL itinerary, the board would be open to letting him miss England Test matches.
Dinesh Karthik, who works alongside Flower at RCB and will also take on a coaching role at London Spirit, claims that the supporters will not be pleased with the coach’s absence from Test matches for the IPL. When the former India wicketkeeper mentioned that Jacob Bethell and Jofra Archer played in the franchise league but missed England matches, the media was incensed.
“In all seriousness, I think he’ll be a great candidate,” he said. He should undoubtedly be considered, but given England’s current situation and his busy schedule, I would be shocked if he accepted. I’m sure he didn’t have time because he used to participate in a number of leagues.
According to an item I read, England will be pleased to accommodate the IPL and then the remaining Test cricket, but [it will be very tough] given the current schedule. For example, Jacob Bethell’s absence from the opening Test and Jofra Archer’s unavailability caused a stir, with many asking, “Why? How come one of the players is not there?” On the Sky Sports Cricket Podcast, Dinesh Karthik stated.
As England prepares preparing for the home Ashes series next summer, Dinesh Karthik thinks it would be stupid for the Three Lions to allow their coach miss out on crucial preparations.
“With Andy Flower, with an already pre-signed contract with RCB, which would mean that he would miss parts of all those [Tests],” the 41-year-old remarked, praising Flower as a fantastic hire but stating that it is highly unlikely that he will agree to head the Test side due to his other commitments.
Will it be OK for England to prepare for the Ashes without a coach for one or two Test matches? I’ve heard that there will be a Test match against Bangladesh in May of next year, and if Andy Flower is playing for RCB, that might also provide a problem. Is he competent? Without a doubt. He is undoubtedly among the greatest in the world, if not the greatest. Is he going to have time? The question is that. If the answer is yes, I would be shocked,” Dinesh Karthik continued.
Numerous names have been suggested as potential McCullum replacements for England’s Test coach. Richard Dawson, Stephen Fleming, Andrew Flintoff, Justin Langer, and Kumar Sangakkara are a few of them.
