Former Indian captain Ajinkya Rahane provided shocking justifications for his decision to remove Yashasvi Jaiswal from the pitch during the Duleep Trophy 2022 final in Coimbatore.
Rahane was leading West Zone versus South Zone on September 25, 2022, Day 5 of the competition, when the tragedy occurred. Jaiswal and Ravi Teja got into a brawl in the 50th over of South Zone’s second innings. The issue got worse when umpires approached Rahane about the young batter’s actions.
Ajinkya Rahane made the natural decision to ask Jaiswal to take a quick break from the pitch. The batter returned after missing seven overs.
In a recent interview, Ajinkya Rahane revealed the key reasoning behind this choice. He believed that Jaiswal had inadvertently behaved inappropriately and that the young player might receive a four-game suspension if nothing was done.
“I read the circumstances. At that moment, I had a feeling that things would have gotten out of control. Yes, Yashasvi must have felt horrible at that point. However, I sensed what may occur next. I have witnessed numerous instances of player bans, and you never know when things can change.
Your time is running out and you’ve lost one chance. You never know. I could sense that things were getting out of control. The athletes were both losing their composure. Rahane stated in an interview with The Indian Express, “And it was my responsibility to stop my teammate.”
Ajinkya Rahane was ready for the match referee to suspend him for four games.
The match referee had already prepared a four-match ban for Jaiswal before Ajinkya Rahane intervened. However, the West Zone captain’s decisive action caught the referee off guard. Rahane later revealed the startling outcome of his decision. “The match referee did not expect that,” he explained, adding that the match referee had come to him with the written ban letter ready for enforcement. They were unaware that I would do such a thing. A four-match suspension was prepared by the match referee. The letter was composed.
“This is the letter, but because you did this, I’m tearing it up,” he stated as he approached me. In front of me, he tore up the letter. Ultimately, I was pleased that Jaiswal was spared a match ban and is currently representing India. What might have occurred? After then, he might or might not have continued to play. He’s a good athlete. I’m not denying him any credit. However, you never know,” he continued.
The match referee’s reaction to Ajinkya Rahane intervention
Jaiswal was fined between fifteen and twenty percent of his match expenses instead of being suspended for four games. The youthful batter gave a game-winning performance in the final, scoring 265 from 323 balls in West Zone’s innings. Jaiswal was named Player of the Match after West Zone won by 294 runs.
