Since being accused of drunk driving in Sydney on April 7, 2026, Australian celebrity David Warner has been in the public eye. After being found guilty of a mid-range drunk driving violation in Sydney, he has had another legal setback.

For the next 12 months, the former Australia opener must use an ignition interlock device and pay a $1500 fine.

The case concerns an Easter weekend incident in Maroubra where David Warner was detained by police for trying to switch seats with a passenger close to a random breath-testing checkpoint.

When and Why Was David Warner Accused of Drunk Driving?

The event took place at Maroubra, Sydney, on April 5, 2026. David Warner came onto a haphazard breathalyser station while operating a van on Malabar Road. He halted the car just before the checkpoint rather than driving on.

Warner had a roadside breathalyser test, and the results were positive. After being brought to the Maroubra Police Station for additional testing, his blood alcohol content was found to be 0.104, more than double the legal limit of 0.05.

After captaining the Karachi Kings in the Pakistan Super League on an Easter tour to the subcontinent, the former Australian cricket player was on his way back home.

Awais Ahmad, David Warner’s attorney, contended that the incident’s exposure had already resulted in serious repercussions for his client.

Warner’s commercial prospects and chances of participating in international T20 competitions may be impacted by the attention, he added, citing claims that have surfaced in international media outlets.

Ahmad also expressed concern about criticism directed at Warner and his wife, Candice, on social media. His offence has serious repercussions. Opportunities for business are being impacted. Since then, there has been a significant media assault,” Mr. Ahmad stated.

In David Warner’s case, Judge Clare Farnan declared that it was improbable that he would commit a similar crime again.I acknowledge that Mr. Warner is unlikely to commit another crime. Unfortunately, though, drunk driving continues to be a major contributing factor in many crashes in New South Wales,” she stated.

She added that the situation was made more terrible by the fact that children were in the car when the crime was committed. It is crucial to remember that Warner must abide by an interlock licence requirement and has been fined $1,500.

What Interlock Device Does David Warner Currently Need to Use While Driving?

A tiny breathalyser attached to a car’s ignition system is called an ignition interlock device. It is intended to prevent an automobile from starting if the driver’s breath contains more alcohol than is allowed.

David Warner will now need to use the device to give a breath sample before he can drive. The engine can start if the reading is within the permitted range. The car stays secured and the unsuccessful attempt is noted if further alcohol is found.
