Joe Root expressed his dissatisfaction with Brendon McCullum departure in comments made following the coaching change. The England captain took into account their working relationship and recognised McCullum’s impact during his tenure.
Brendon McCullum quit as the Test team’s head coach following England’s 4-1 Ashes series defeat to Australia in July 2026. Stephen Fleming, a former New Zealand teammate, took McCullum’s place. A significant change in England’s Test team occurred when Joe Root became captain after Ben Stokes retired from international cricket in June. Root will lead England in a three-Test home series against Pakistan beginning on August 19.
Fleming’s assessment by Joe Root as the new test manager
Root complimented Fleming’s athletic and coaching credentials and applauded his selection. While captaining New Zealand in 111 Test matches and building a strong reputation in franchise cricket, Fleming guided the Chennai Super Kings to five IPL titles and two Champions League Twenty20 triumphs.
“[Fleming and I] have crossed paths a bit over the last few years when he’s coached different teams around the world,” said Fleming, who had never previously coached an international red-ball squad. I’ve always looked up to someone. As a player, I truly did appreciate him. The way he has always prioritised himself as a captain. Even in T20 cricket, his coaching record has been outstanding. In that regard, there are a lot of things I’m excited about,” Joe Root remarked.
Joe Root evaluation of Archer’s workload in his maiden captaincy
Joe Root was accused of overusing Jofra Archer during his first term as Test captain after bowling the seamer for 42 overs in his first international match in New Zealand in November 2019, prior to a period of injuries that prevented Archer from playing a Test match for more than four years between 2021 and 2025. Root has pledged not to make the same mistake with Archer during his second term as test manager.
“I believe that perhaps I may have overused and overbowled him. The attack he now employs is a great fit for him. Now, there are other individuals who might be able to fulfilll a position that I may have previously utilised Jofra for. Root stated, “I think he’s a generational talent and someone who is going to have produced wonderful things for England across the formats.
He’s capable of doing some wonderful things in Test cricket.” As I mentioned, it’s obvious that I didn’t do everything correctly the first time. Despite my faults, he will play a significant role in our future endeavours. “I’m thrilled to collaborate with him once more,” he continued.
