Ben Stokes has said he has no remorse over excluding James Anderson from the Test squad as England prepares for the Ashes 2025–2026. He explained that the decision was made in order to ensure a successful outcome for the upcoming tour to Australia. After getting 704 wickets in the first Test match between England and the West Indies at Lord’s, Anderson concluded his 188-Test international career. His last Test appearance was this one.

Ben Stokes was aware of the challenges of the choice and how it might affect the seasoned pacer. Over the course of nearly two decades, Anderson made a significant contribution to English cricket at the highest level, which the captain appreciated. Stokes maintained that making tough decisions is an essential aspect of being a leader, despite the call’s emotional impact.

“I’m sure Jimmy will be disappointed because it was probably not a pleasant thing to hear for someone who has contributed so much to the game. However, once more, the game transcends individuals. The game has moved on from him and from me, and it will continue to do so.

However, that shouldn’t negate his contributions to English cricket. I mean, is he still playing for the Lancs and serving as captain? Once more, he simply enjoys playing cricket. Ben Stokes stated on the For the Love of Cricket podcast, “You should never forget what he did for England in that shirt.”

Ben Stokes acknowledges the difficult Anderson decision.

Ben Stokes stressed how important it is for leaders to make difficult choices. The former England captain stated that the team selection process was carefully considered prior to the Australian tour and that the decision was not made hastily. “Wasn’t made overnight, no,” he said. But once more, you have to be able to make those decisions, stick by them, and live by them when you’re in those leadership roles,” Ben Stokes stated.

“And if people don’t think they’re correct, that’s completely OK, because everyone can have an opinion on that kind of stuff.” However, I still think of Jimmy as someone I became extremely close to, we played a lot of cricket with, and he continues to do what he does. However, I don’t regret the choice we made because we did it in anticipation of what we believed would be a favorable conclusion for us before traveling to Australia,” he continued.
