Due to Marnus Labuschagne‘s persistently subpar performance throughout the Test series against Bangladesh, Ricky Ponting has urged Australia to move on. Labuschagne continued a challenging run that had seen him score 1 and 31 in the first Test in Darwin when he was removed for 4 runs in the second Test on August 22 in Mackay.
After Day 1 of the second Test, Ponting voiced his dissatisfaction with Labuschagne’s protracted problems and said it was time for selectors to look at other options. Although the former captain of Australia recognised the selectors’ attempts to get Labuschagne back on track, he believed the evidence had been too strong.
Technical shortcomings and the back-foot issue
The former captain emphasised how rival bowlers were routinely taking advantage of the batter’s incapacity to strike off the back foot.
Ponting emphasised that his demand for change was a conclusion based on persistent underperformance rather than a panic response to recent losses. He explained why he was in favour of a change in selection by drawing on his experiences as a player and captain.
Ponting determined that Labuschagne’s ability to score runs was hampered by a particular technical problem.
In recent years, Labuschagne’s form had drastically declined. It had been more than three years since he had scored a century for his country. He has only amassed 1,655 runs at an average of 30.09 in 61 Test innings since the beginning of 2023.
