Wicketkeeper-batter Prabhsimran Singh has been called up for the first time as a senior for the July 23 opening of India’s Twenty20 International series against Zimbabwe. The Punjab Kings opener’s only objective is to wear the India jersey following a missed chance at the 2023 Asian Games. He recently met with his mentor, Yuvraj Singh, and shared details of the conversation that kept him grounded and future-oriented.
The right-hander boasts a distinctive IPL pedigree with this call-up. No other Indian has managed to score 500 runs in two separate league seasons without receiving a senior cap. His selection was influenced by his recent stint with India A and his outstanding IPL achievements.
Since opening positions in Indian cricket are still highly competitive, he and several other new players from the domestic circuit were added to the 15-person squad. “When you start playing cricket, there are two main objectives in your mind, and even in your parents’ minds, to represent the country and to play in the IPL.”
I currently play in the IPL, but I now have the chance to represent the nation. I also received it earlier during the Asian Games, but I was unable to participate. Prabhsimran stated on JioStar, “Now, my only wish is that I return as a capped player this time around and, obviously, perform well there so that I get more opportunities.”

In India, there is intense competition among batters vying for openers. Singh acknowledged this fact while talking about his time with India A, where he collaborated with fellow opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in a tri-series involving Sri Lanka A and Afghanistan A.
“The IPL is such a big platform where you rub shoulders with international players from all over the world, youngsters from across the country, established players representing India, and even legends who are playing alongside you,” Singh said.
It is, of course, a little difficult. However, it’s good competition when you look at it. The only thought that comes to mind is, “Just give me an opportunity, and if I get the chance, hopefully I’ll do well,” despite the intense competition for the Indian team’s starting position.
Vaibhav and I recently travelled to play in the India A series against Afghanistan and Sri Lanka. It’s a lot of fun to watch him bat. We were able to spend more time together and talk about a variety of topics because we were opening together. “It was an amazing experience,” Prabhsimran remarked.
