Former Australian all-rounder Moises Henriques has announced his immediate retirement from domestic cricket. The 39-year-old hasn’t thrown up his boots completely, though, as he is prepared to play for his native Portugal after earning a spot in the World Cup Qualifier.
One of the greatest players in the history of the Australian domestic circuit will be Moises Henriques. The right-hander is the most capped domestic player in the history of the country, having made 420 appearances while playing for the Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League and New South Wales in various formats.
Moises Henriques, who was retiring as a one-club player, revealed that he had interest from other BBL teams after the Sixers refused to extend his contract. However, he remained committed to the state of New South Wales and decided to focus on the next phase of his career.
“As a professional player, I have been extremely privileged to call cricket my career for the past 22 years. Other BBL clubs expressed interest in me, but I didn’t feel comfortable moving on. I want to express my gratitude to everyone I’ve had the good fortune to work and play with. I’m positive that I would have arrived at this point much sooner if it weren’t for those connections and my intense love for them. According to Cricinfo, Moises Henriques stated, “I believe it’s time for me to call it quits on my career and start looking forward to the next chapter of my life.”
Moises Henriques will also be remembered for his exceptional services to the Sydney Sixers.
He achieved the league record with 154 appearances while playing for the squad in all 15 Big Bash League seasons. With 3,324 runs and 22 wickets, the former Australian international guided his team to three titles, including the first BBL season in 2012. As the Sixers defeated the Perth Scorchers in the final game, Henriques scored 70 runs in the second inning to win Player of the Match.
Henriques played for the Sixers team that won the Champions League T20 later that year. The current Australian fast-bowling foursome of Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins, and Mitchell Starc, along with Steve Smith, Brad Haddin, and Nathan McCullum, form a formidable team.
