Andy Flower has ruled himself out of the competition for the open England Men’s Test Head Coach role, and Brendon McCullum was recently sacked of his duties following the Three Lions’ 2-1 series loss to New Zealand.
Even though he has held the post in the past, Andy Flower, who currently heads the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the IPL and the London Spirit in the Hundred, said he is content heading the two teams on the franchise circuit and feels more comfortable with the current path.
“In the end, I’m really content with the work I’m doing right now. I work for a few excellent companies. I have excellent teams and individuals around me, and I feel very at ease in my current role.It would be an honour for me or anyone else to be the Test coach. I have worked with England in the past, and I had the wonderful opportunity to be their head coach and represent them as one of their leaders some years ago.
I have very happy memories of those times. However, I’m currently quite at ease with what I’m doing. According to Cricinfo, Flower stated, “I’m going to stick with doing that,” in an interview with London Spirit.
The England and Wales Cricket Board’s CEO, Richard Gould, had hinted that Andy Flower was the front-runner when he stated that the board would permit the new Test coach to work with the IPL.
In response, Andy Flower acknowledged that juggling both responsibilities could be difficult.
“Well, I can’t speak for other individuals, and speaking on behalf of the ECB would surely be inappropriate. They will have to decide it on their own. Personally, I don’t think I could have done both, especially because the IPL took place in the early months of the English summer.
That wasn’t an option for me because if I were the England Test coach, I would like to be here observing and interacting with the people I needed to observe and communicate with,” Flower continued.
From 2009 until 2014, Flower was the coach of the England Men’s team. Under the former Zimbabwean batsman, the Three Lions had one of their best Test cricket runs, winning a historic series in India and the Ashes both at home and away. He has also been successful in the franchise circuit, guiding RCB to their first championship in 2025 and overseeing their successful defence in 2026.
