Wasim Jaffer has urged India’s team management to provide clarity on Rohit Sharma‘s future as an ODI hitter, especially with the 2027 World Cup approaching. The former India opener believes Sharma has made himself accessible for the forthcoming bilateral series with one long-term goal in mind. Jaffer’s intervention follows Sharma’s inclusion in the ODI squad for the three-match home series against the West Indies.
In a YouTube video, Jaffer revealed his views on how the Indian squad runs and the need of open communication with Sharma. He admitted that team management had most likely already discussed Sharma’s job and expectations with him, but he believed the continued public speculation necessitated an official declaration from the selectors.
Jaffer requests clarity from selectors.
Jaffer emphasized that Rohit Sharma choice to remain available for selection stems from his desire to play in the 2027 World Cup, which will be contested in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. The former hitter stated that Rohit Sharma is not only training for bilateral matches, but also for the global competition. Jaffer requested both Ajit Agarkar, chief selector, and Gautam Gambhir, head coach, to openly address Sharma’s status and put an end to the lingering dispute over his place in the team.
Rohit Sharma World Cup concentration and previous performances
Rohit Sharma recent success in England offered context for Jaffer’s views. After struggling in the first two ODIs of the series, Sharma hit 138 off 110 balls in the decider at Lord’s, becoming the first Indian hitter to make an ODI century there. This knock highlighted his ability to deliver when it counted the most, validating Jaffer’s point that Rohit Sharma should not be judged only on a small number of performances.
The West Indies series begins on September 27 in Thiruvananthapuram, giving Sharma an immediate opportunity to improve on his recent performance. Jaffer’s request for clarity echoes broader fears about the prospects of older players in the Indian team, particularly as the World Cup approaches.
