Ajit Agarkar, chairman of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selection committee, is facing an unclear future, with the national selection meeting for India’s forthcoming white-ball series against the West Indies slated for Wednesday, September 16. According to various reports, Agarkar has had no communication with the BCCI’s senior brass regarding a possible extension of his tenure.

India will play three ODIs and five T20Is against West Indies, with the limited-overs series beginning on September 27. While the T20I team is set to closely follow India’s Asian Games contingent, the selectors must make various considerations before finalizing the ODI roster.

However, Wednesday’s meeting could be Ajit Agarkar last task as head of the selection committee. His current contract expires on October 4, and reports indicate that a one-year extension does not appear feasible at this time. Ajit Agarkar was supposed to stay in the post until the 2027 ODI World Cup, but this has apparently changed in recent weeks.

According to NDTV Sports, no major decision-makers at the BCCI have approached Ajit Agarkar about his future as of yet. According to the article, Ajit Agarkar has told those close to him that he plans to send a ‘thank you note’ to BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia following the West Indies selection conference, thanking the board for the opportunity to serve as head selector for three years.

However, the BCCI has not formally stated that it intends to replace Ajit Agarkar.

The lack of contact between the two parties has further added to the uncertainty surrounding his future, with the board unable to make a firm decision on his extension.

Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya are among the players under spotlight.

Several famous names may return in the forthcoming ODI selection. Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya are among the players set to be discussed, with Ruturaj Gaikwad and Rajat Patidar also allegedly vying for spots in the squad.

Before deciding on the roster for the three-match ODI series, the selectors would need to evaluate the availability and fitness of various players. With Agarkar’s present contract slated to expire on October 4, Wednesday’s meeting is expected to garner more attention than the team selection itself.
