Javagal Srinath, a former bowler for India, has urged young players to avoid being sidetracked by the glitz of Twenty20 tournaments and to take Test cricket seriously. During his playing career, Srinath represented India in all formats. He delivered these comments at the Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association’s Season Awards 2025–2026, which took place at the Brilliant Convention Center.
Javagal Srinath highlighted that Test cricket should be the major focus for aspiring players as it continues to be the cornerstone of a cricketer’s growth.
He explained how success in the longer game applies to other versions of the sport, highlighting the connection between Test cricket and lesser formats.
Why young players should care about Test cricket
Javagal Srinath viewpoint is based on his personal experience as a fast bowler who claimed 236 Test wickets while playing for his country between November 1991 and October 2002. With 315 wickets in 229 one-day internationals, he also emerged as India’s top ODI wicket-taker. His career served as an example of the need of becoming proficient in lengthier formats before switching to shorter ones.
The former bowler emphasised that Test cricket is crucial for long-term career development and should not be overshadowed by the appeal of Twenty20 leagues, especially the Indian Premier League. He pointed out that it is the duty of coaches, parents, and state associations to help young players develop a long-term cricket career. Srinath noted that because players in shorter leagues are rotated quickly, Test cricket gives stability and longevity that Twenty20 formats cannot.
