According to Tamim Iqbal, President of the Bangladesh Cricket Board, the 2026–2027 Bangladesh Premier League may not be held. Before the board decides to hold the franchise-based T20 tournament again, there are a lot of challenges to overcome. Traditionally, the event is held in the December–January timeframe.
The head of BCB has said unequivocally that operational quality and financial sustainability are essential requirements for the event’s future.
Tamim emphasised that the BPL will only move on if it can be organised to the necessary standard and ruled out rushing into the next tournament.
In order to address fundamental issues, such as payment arrangements and financial guarantees, the board has interacted with franchise representatives. The BCB’s resolve to address systemic problems prior to committing to a new edition is reflected in these conversations.
Postponement is caused by financial losses
The board has decided to reevaluate the tournament’s viability in its current form due to the financial losses. The goal of franchise cricket is to make money for the board rather than exhaust its resources. The head of BCB has stated that before the next edition can start, structural and financial problems must be fixed.
BCB’s dedication to fixing structural problems
The BCB has not excluded out holding the competition in upcoming seasons despite the postponement. Although the board is still dedicated to the BPL idea, it is unwilling to move forward without resolving the fundamental issues that have resulted in a series of financial losses.
Rather than permanently abandoning the franchise system, the decision represents a practical approach to tournament management.
