After playing Test cricket for 21 years, Mushfiqur Rahim is now regarded as Bangladesh’s most seasoned member of the team. On his first tour of Australia since 2003, the seasoned batsman is a key member of a team that has started to change how it approaches the longest format. Bangladesh’s historic first Test victory in Darwin was a major turning point in the country’s cricket history.
Mushfiqur scored 36 runs and partnered with skipper Shanto for an important 66 runs during the Darwin victory. As part of the 2025–2027 ICC World Test Championship, the tour will continue with the second Test on August 22, 2026, at Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay.
Mushfiqur is now solely focused on Test cricket, where he continues to be Bangladesh’s most capped player and all-time top run scorer, after retiring from white-ball international cricket. A senior team member considered his indispensable contribution to the group. One prominent Bangladeshi player was quoted by Cricbuzz as stating, “I don’t know what will happen when Mushfiqur bhai will be around.”
Following Darwin, Mushfiqur’s strategic advice
Over his twenty years in the sport, Mushfiqur has experienced a personal metamorphosis. He was emotionally motivated early in his career, and his mood fluctuated according to how well he batted. His ability to deal with personal setbacks and impart knowledge to teammates has improved over time, making him a reliable member of the team.
He has used his knowledge to help younger athletes get through difficult times. If my memory serves me correctly, our goal for the most recent victory at Mount Maunganui was to win one session (at a time),” Mushfiqur stated. We compete each time we visit. Both the pitch and the condition are irrelevant. The opponents are also people. So, just keep in mind that if you follow your plan and trust in God, the outcome will work itself out,” he went on.
The Darwin triumph has reaffirmed how crucial it is for the Bangladeshi team to be consistent and make small improvements. Mushfiqur underlined that a defined system and consistent effort are necessary to replicate such accomplishment. Instead of resting on this accomplishment, he considered the necessity of building upon it.
Bangladesh’s changing dressing room culture
Over the last four to five years, Mushfiqur has seen the biggest transformation in Bangladeshi Test cricket: a fundamental alteration in the way players perceive their individual and group responsibilities.
Once characterised by lone performances, the dressing room has transformed into a group of players with the potential to win games and a sincere desire to advance as a team. The possibilities are endless in terms of advancement. You can celebrate Darwin’s victory, but how can we do it again? Day in, day out is the sole formula, according to Mushfiqur.
I have several wonderful memories from this group, particularly the red-ball group. I am therefore rather proud. And the most significant shift I have observed over the past four or five years is that each of you wants to better themselves, which is crucial,” Mushfiqur said.
Beyond numbers and performance indicators, Mushfiqur aims to foster a culture. It is centred on a shared commitment to team success, mutual support, and development. The individualistic mindset that typified previous stages of Bangladesh’s Test cricket is contrasted with this attitude.
