India skipper Shubman Gill will have to make important selection decisions prior to the first Test match against Sri Lanka in Galle on August 15, 2026. During the two-Test trip, India, who are currently in fifth place with four wins, four losses, and one tie from nine games, will take part in the World Test Championship 2025–27. Shubman Gill, who missed part of the team’s warm-up match owing to a finger injury, has been cleared to lead India in their quest to raise their WTC rankings.
The team has changed several times as a result of injury concerns. Jasprit Bumrah was initially nominated but ultimately ruled out due to a left knee injury he suffered during the ODI series against England. He was replaced by Auqib Nabi. Washington Sundar, who will miss the first Test, has been replaced by Saransh Jain.
Sarfaraz Khan will meet the Indian team in Colombo prior to their departure for Galle for the first Test. “Gurnoor Brar is excellent with the old ball as he can extract bounce at a good pace.” However, as we saw in the warm-up match, Prasidh Krishna has been bowling well lately. It’s a difficult decision. Since Jasprit Bumrah isn’t present, someone needs to take the initiative.
Understanding the game’s tempo is crucial, according to Shubman Gill, who was cited by NDTV Sports.
Player development and team confidence
Devdutt Padikkal is expected to step in at No. 3 in the absence of fellow left-hander Sai Sudharsan, while Dhruv Jurel, who is under pressure, is likely to remain in the middle order despite his poor performances in the last few Tests. Gill feels he is improving as a player with every game after a full year as Test captain. The objective of this series is to get the World Test Championship juggernaut back on track after it veered off course in recent months.
“Players will develop independently. We must give them time; certain players need a little extra time. I feel at ease in my current position as captain. Staying in the running for a spot in the World Test Championship final is our aim. For that, we must win six or seven Test matches. Thus, we wish to start here,” stated Shubman Gill.
