Bowling coach Morne Morkel has discussed the selection conundrum captain Shubman Gill faces as India prepares for its maiden Test match against Sri Lanka at Galle on August 15, 2026. The match is a part of the ICC World Test Championship 2025–2027 cycle after significant changes were made to India’s bowling unit.
Morkel talked about how challenging it is to deal with India’s left-arm spinner options during the pre-series news conference. Kuldeep Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, and a third left-arm spinner each contribute special talents to the team’s attack: “Jadeja has class and experience, while Kuldeep is an attacking spinner.” Each of our three left-arm spinners is unique. They are skilled.
“Depends on how Shubman uses them,” Morkel stated during the news conference prior to the game.
Galle’s pitch conditions and India’s bowling approach
India’s bowling plans have been hampered by injury. Due to a knee injury, Auqib Nabi replaced Jasprit Bumrah on August 3 and Washington Sundar is still out for the first Test. Jadeja’s return to the Test team after missing the Afghanistan series in June adds to the selection conundrum.
Morkel assessed how India’s bowling strategy was impacted by the Galle pitch. The surface will provide opportunities for both pace and spin bowling, he claimed, even if conditions will vary as the game progressed.
It appears to be a good surface that allows for the usage of spin as an attacking option with pace on the other end. It all comes down to mindset, and there will be ups and downs and an uneven bounce throughout the game, according to Morkel.
The bowling coach provided clear guidance on how India’s pace bowlers should adapt to the conditions of the pitch as the game went on. “The ball will go soft after 20-25 overs,” he said, highlighting the need of tactical execution and comprehending how the surface would change. Use the crease, short ball, and carry out the plans with intelligence. The surface is appealing, and the batters may have the opening inning. “Bat big,” Morkel remarked.
