Mohammad Kaif supports Sarfaraz Khan‘s inclusion in India’s playing XI for the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka, which begins on August 15, 2026. Sarfaraz was appointed as Sai Sudharsan’s replacement on August 9, 2026, in response to Sudharsan’s right toe stress reaction. The batsman joined the Indian team in Colombo prior to the team’s departure for Galle for the first Test.
Kaif argued that Sarfaraz has superior technical skills for the conditions at Galle compared to Dhruv Jurel. The former India batsman highlighted that Sarfaraz’s removal from the squad had nothing to do with his performance and questioned why he had been benched after his debut.
“He wasn’t permitted to play for a reason. It has nothing to do with performance. There was no justification. that the bat was not functioning and that he was not making runs. Against New Zealand, he scored runs. He crossed the field. He was performing admirably. He was in shape.
In a video posted to his YouTube account, Kaif stated, “He had a good start when he scored against England. Whatever happened in between, he was removed.” However, I believe that the person who stated that he ought to return is considering India. India is considering cricket. We must prevail. We’ll need competent players. We’ll need competent players. We’ll need talented players,” he continued.
Why Kaif believes Sarfaraz’s approach is superior for Galle
In six Test matches for India, Sarfaraz has amassed 371 runs at an average of 37.10, with three half-centuries and one century. In his finest innings against New Zealand, he scored 150. His most recent Test participation was in November 2024.
During the 2025 Ranji Trophy, Sarfaraz was Mumbai’s third-highest run scorer with 429 runs at an average of 53.62 in seven games. His first-class batting average of 64.73 is among the best for players with at least 50 innings. Kaif highlighted Sarfaraz’s track record against spin bowling and his fit for the middle order at Galle, where spin-friendly conditions typically assist hitters with solid mechanical foundations.
“They might say, ‘Jurel has been with us already,’ if they follow the tradition of supporting players who have already played for the squad. We will support him even if he hasn’t scored regularly because he has already been a member of the team.
Sarfaraz will have to wait if that is the strategy. However, because he can play spin at No. 5 or No. 6, Sarfaraz’s name appears in my best XI. The former cricket player who is now a broadcaster stated, “His record against spin is excellent.”
Sarfaraz’s mechanical advantages over spin bowling
Kaif elaborated on the specific batting skills that make Sarfaraz valuable when spinners dominate the bowling assault. The former India batter emphasised how Sarfaraz’s shot-making range and footwork against spin bowling set him apart from other middle-order options in the team.
The first Test will begin in Galle on August 15, while the second Test will begin at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo on August 23.
