Irfan Pathan has thot about how important it is to remain with one cricket team in order to make a lasting impression. The former Indian bowler, who played for multiple IPL teams during his career, provided insights into how a player’s loyalty to a particular team affects their reputation and success in the sport.
“If you want to create a legacy as a player, you can only do that by staying with one franchise if you get that opportunity,” said Pathan, who began his franchise career after playing for Punjab for three years. However, that doesn’t typically occur. I spent three years playing for my first team, Punjab. Punjab wanted me to continue in the fourth year, but they were unable to keep any players because of the retention regulations and other factors.
No one was kept on board. Irfan Pathan stated thru JioStar.
The significance of franchise loyalty in leaving a lasting legacy
Irfan Pathan compared it to how clubs attempt to retain their finest players despite structural constraints. He demonstrated how even well-intentioned retention strategies sometimes fall short due to unforeseen circumstances by using the Kolkata Knight Riders’ approach to nurturing emerging talent.
“They would have wanted to retain a talent like Shubman Gill. They selected him first and groomed him. However, there are situations where you just can’t keep players,” Irfan Pathan continued.
The fast-bowling former all-rounder emphasised the value of stability and continuity in a player’s franchise career. “If you get the chance to stay with one franchise, let go of a few things, build your legacy, and stay with that team,” Irfan Pathan advised players to choose long-term affiliation with a single team over switching teams frequently.
After leaving Punjab to play for the Delhi Daredevils (now Capitals), Sunrisers Hyderabad, Chennai Super Kings, Rising Pune Supergiant, and Gujarat Lions, Pathan became one of the few players to have played for six different IPL clubs in his career.
