John Turner, a seamer for Hampshire and England, announced his retirement from professional cricket at the age of 25. The Johannesburg-born right-arm fast stated a chronic back stress fracture as an explanation for his choice. Since June 2025, he has not participated in any cricket matches.
John Turner participated in four international games for England in 2024, taking three wickets against the West Indies in two ODIs and two T20Is. At the time of the announcement, he had an ECB development deal through late 2025 and two years remaining on his Hampshire contract.
His final first-class appearance came during Hampshire’s May 23–25, 2025, match against Sussex at Southampton. Turner left cricket to study economics and finance at the University of Exeter.
“I have, however, decided to retire from the game, and as you can imagine, this has been one of the hardest decisions I’ve had to make. The stress fracture, which has sidelined me for over a year, as well as my injury record, naturally made me think of my future both as a cricketer and away from the game, and subsequently, I decided now was the right time to pursue my next challenge,” stated John Turner in a statement.
“It was always my dream to play professional and international cricket, and doing so for Hampshire and England has been nothing short of living out those same childhood dreams,” he said.
What impact did John Turner back stress fracture have on his availability?
More than a year before he declared his retirement in August 2026, Turner was unable to play any cricket after June 2025 due to a stress fracture. He claims that the injury was a part of a broader trend of fitness issues that caused him to think about his future both inside and outside of the sport.
Although he had two years left on his Hampshire contract, he retired for personal and medical reasons rather than because his contract had expired. Turner described the decision as one of the most difficult of his life because he would never be able to play county or international cricket again due to the injury.
How will Hampshire Cricket be affected by John Turner retirement?
John Turner played for a Hampshire squad that made it to two One-Day Cup finals and four T20 Finals Days in the five years before he retired. Due to his absence since June 2025, the county’s seam attack was already deficient; his resignation now fills that need. Hampshire’s director of cricket, Giles White, paid tribute to the sailor who was leaving.
“John Turner is an exceptionally talented player, and all of Hampshire Cricket is saddened that his journey in the professional game has come to an end. He gave everything for the club and for England, and whilst we are saddened that he has called time on his playing career, we wish him all the best in his next chapter, and we will look forward to welcoming him back in the future,” White said.
“The opportunity and belief the club showed in me are something I could never thank them enough for. I have experienced more over the last few years than I could ever imagine, and none of that would be possible without the support from everyone at the club,” Turner said.
