After apparently choosing to quit the Mumbai Indians (MI) after the team’s dismal IPL 2026 campaign, Hardik Pandya has emerged as one of the most sought-after names in the IPL trade market.

Three IPL teams are reportedly interested in signing the star all-rounder, according to recent sources. But among those clubs, Chennai Super Kings (CSK), the Mumbai Indians’ fiercest rivals, have apparently emerged as the front-runners to finalise what would turn out to be one of the greatest transfers in IPL history.

The five-time champions and Hardik Pandya are apparently at odds over a significant problem, so the transaction is not as straightforward as it appears.

According to reports, Hardik Pandya wants to be the captain of CSK.

Rohit Juglan, a sports journalist, claims that Hardik Pandya has made one point very evident during the talks. If he joins CSK, the Indian all-rounder allegedly wants to be captain.

CSK, however, is unwilling to comply with that request. According to reports, the squad does not want to replace current captain Ruturaj Gaikwad since they view him as the team’s long-term face.Right now, Hardik needs to be captain. However, Ruturaj is the only person CSK is willing to use as the franchise’s face,” the journalist stated.

As a result, the captaincy has emerged as the most significant obstacle in the highly anticipated MI-CSK transaction, with Hardik Pandya and Gaikwad engaged in a straight shootout.

Legendary CSK player MS Dhoni may intervene to assist settle the dispute, according to sources. Notably, Hardik Pandya and MS Dhoni have a close friendship, and their admiration for one another has grown with time.

In addition, Ruturaj Gaikwad has a unique relationship with Dhoni. Throughout Ruturaj’s tenure at CSK, the former India captain has supported and mentored him multiple times.

In fact, Dhoni personally gave Ruturaj Gaikwad leadership responsibilities when he decided to retire as CSK captain prior to IPL 2024, demonstrating his faith in the young batsman.

It is now thought that Dhoni could talk to Ruturaj or Hardik and persuade one of them to carry on without demanding captaincy. Therefore, if CSK hopes to successfully finalise the high-profile trade, his involvement may become critical.

Which IPL teams are able to meet Hardik Pandya’s demands?

The Mumbai Indians and CSK are still in talks, although a definitive deal has not yet been reached. Therefore, a number of other teams could swiftly enter the competition for Hardik Pandya if CSK is unable to come to an agreement.

The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are a major competitor. The team requires an experienced Indian all-rounder in addition to a new skipper following Ajinkya Rahane’s retirement.

Hardik is a fantastic fit for both. After all, he has already demonstrated his leadership abilities by leading the Gujarat Titans to the 2022 IPL championship and another final in 2023.

In addition to KKR, the Delhi Capitals are closely monitoring the situation. Axar Patel is reportedly participating in trade talks right now. DC may be searching for a new skipper if the Indian all-rounder departs the team.

An accomplished Indian all-rounder who can contribute with the bat and the ball would also be necessary for the team. They may also require a dependable Indian alternative, even though they have foreign fast bowlers like Mitchell Starc and Lungi Ngidi.
