The BCCI is currently not considering India’s premier all-rounder Hardik Pandya for every bilateral ODI series. Rather, the board is concentrating on keeping him healthy for the ICC ODI World Cup in 2027.
The management thinks that controlling his workload now will help him play at his best during the major competition, even though his recent injury delayed his return.
In order to prepare for the 2027 World Cup, Hardik had previously begun a rigorous training regimen at the BCCI CoE in Bengaluru. However, the board had to alter its plans and concentrate on his long-term fitness after he had another injury during his recuperation.
Notably, during the 2026 Indian Premier League, Hardik experienced a back spasm. Following that, he received rehabilitation at CoE and even bowled his entire 10-over quota during practice sessions.
But he suffered a low-grade quadriceps strain right before India’s ODI series against Afghanistan. As a result, he was unable to play in the series against Afghanistan and England.
Despite delaying his fitness clearance, the injury was simply a small setback, according to a RevSportz article.
Hardik is presently adhering to a unique “performance block” program, according to the report. The BCCI wants him to return to peak health and keep it up till the 2027 World Cup rather than rushing him back for a bilateral series. According to the article, a source stated, “Hardik’s recovery had a few hiccups, but it’s absolutely fine now.”
Why Hardik Pandya Selection Is Not Being Prioritised by BCCI
The BCCI does not want Hardik Pandya to play in every white-ball series for the upcoming year, according to the report. Rather, when needed, he will primarily be utilised in the 50-over format. As a result, the all-rounder no longer prioritises bilateral ODI series.
Notably, the Indian board feels that he will be less likely to sustain another injury if his workload is closely managed. Therefore, having a completely fit Hardik Pandya available for the 2027 ODI World Cup is the primary goal. The emphasis is on the 2027 World Cup, where having a healthy Hardik would be crucial, according to the source.
India is still looking for a backup for Hardik Pandya.
India is still looking for a trustworthy replacement for Hardik Pandya. Despite testing a number of fast-bowling all-rounders, none have been able to match his total impact.
One of the top contenders, Harshit Rana, has scored 124 runs and claimed 26 wickets in 14 ODI innings. But his development has also been hampered by injuries. Shivam Dube, on the other hand, has had difficulty making an impression in ODIs. In six innings, he has taken just three wickets and scored just 43 runs.
Nitish Kumar Reddy, who is supported by assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate, has also shown promise. Despite playing little international cricket, NKR has been outstanding in List A games, capturing 23 wickets in 32 innings and scoring 679 runs in 25 innings.
Hardik continues to be India’s most valuable pace-bowling all-rounder despite these up-and-coming talents. In 94 ODIs thus far, he has amassed 1,904 runs and claimed 91 wickets. His expertise and ability to win games will therefore be essential to India’s chances of winning the 2027 ODI World Cup assuming he remains healthy.
