Former India batsman Mohammad Kaif says that although teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi may be anxious before the Zimbabwe T20I series, a powerful innings of 50–60 runs might be exactly what the young opener needs to regain confidence after a difficult tour to England.
Sooryavanshi made his India debut against England in his first Twenty20 International, hitting 14 from 10 balls, however England prevailed by four wickets. The teenager scored 175 runs off of just 80 balls in the Under-19 World Cup final against England at Harare Sports Club in Zimbabwe. The same location will host this series. The contrast between his outstanding youth performances and his cautious international start has created anticipation and scrutiny.
“Vaibhav Suryavanshi had the opportunity, but his bat did not produce a significant score. Because he is a class batter, he would also like to contribute to the team. Winning the Orange Cap in the IPL at the age of 15 is a tremendous accomplishment. He may be anxious at the moment. He will shine if he scores between fifty and sixty runs.
There is absolutely no question about his potential,” Kaif stated on Cricbuzz.
India will play three Twenty20 Internationals against Zimbabwe at Harare Sports Club from July 23 to July 26, 2026. The left-handed hitter, who was just 15 years and 65 days old, became the youngest Orange Cap holder ever after an incredible IPL 2026 season. However, his domestic success hasn’t yet translated to the international scene.
Captain Shreyas Iyer is under pressure due to India’s subpar performance.
Iyer has not won any of his previous seven games as captain of India. “Even before the India captaincy, Shreyas Iyer had a losing run in the second half of IPL 2026. The England tour only made matters worse. India lost 2-0 to Ireland in their first-ever bilateral series.” He wasn’t even on the team until he had the chance to lead India. This is the first time in Indian cricket history that he joined the team as captain, according to Kaif.
“Now, the captain is the one experiencing the most stress following India’s defeat to England and their defeat to Ireland, which nobody had anticipated. We can’t even begin right now, so at least get off to a good start. We can’t even reach the 100-meter mark, but we’ll still run the marathon. That weight will therefore be present,” he continued.
In the Zimbabwe series, Sooryavanshi and Iyer have a chance to turn things around on African territory, but expectations are growing with every match as India seeks to win for the first time in four months.
