Shreyas Iyer asserted that despite India’s T20I series defeats to England and Ireland, numerous positive aspects surfaced and would aid the team going forward.
Since Shreyas Iyer took over as India’s T20I captain from Suryakumar Yadav, the Men in Blue have lost six of their past seven matches, including two against Ireland and four against England. In an effort to make amends, the three-time T20 World Cup winners will play Zimbabwe in a three-match T20I series at the Harare Sports Club this week.
“We had a rough patch in England, but there were a lot of positives out of that.” On the eve of Thursday’s first Twenty20 International, Shreyas Iyer remarked, “We learned what we need to develop as a team going forward, what kind of presence of mind, awareness, and adaptability we need once we step onto the pitch.”
According to the 31-year-old, it is imperative that Indian players adapt to the circumstances, especially those who are travelling to Zimbabwe for the first time.
“Some of us are playing here for the first time, so the quicker we adapt, the better results we will get,” the Mumbai batter added.
“The results didn’t go our way, but that has brought the team closer to each other,” Shreyas Iyer said, adding that his players have grown closer to one another as a result of the awful results in England and Ireland. He also expressed hope that they would be able to bounce back from the catastrophe.
We’ve been talking a lot about how we will play as a team in the future, particularly against Zimbabwe. We’ve played three series outside of India, and since you don’t get this kind of exposure very often, it’s fantastic for us as a team. This is a difficult stage, and the sooner you get through it, the stronger you become as a team, and the outcomes will eventually follow,” Shreyas Iyer said.
When you overcome that fear, you can realise your whole potential: Shreyas Iyer
Shreyas Iyer explained how a fear of failing could harm India’s chances. He also suggested that instead of listening to outside noise, his players focus on playing good cricket and cooperating as a team.
“I don’t think they should be afraid of failing because you play to save yourself when you have such thoughts in the back of your mind. You can reach your full potential when you are free of that fear. We don’t need to pay much attention to what people are saying outside. We must remain in the here and now. The squad will perform better the more we play solid cricket and work together,” Shreyas Iyer said.
