Rohit Sharma, India’s opener, has reportedly been informed that he is no longer part of the selectors’ long-term plans for ODI cricket, except from the current series against England. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to fire the seasoned hitter as it prepares for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
The BCCI’s senior selection committee and head coach Gautam Gambhir reportedly discussed the team’s future strategy with Rohit last week. Rohit might play his final 50-over match in the third and final ODI, which is set for July 19 at Lord’s.
Yashasvi Jaiswal is one of the younger players who the selectors are keen to give more opportunities in ODI cricket, according to The Indian Express. According to the article, “Selectors have informed Rohit he is not in their scheme of things post the England tour and they are moving on from him after this series.”
Rohit Sharma had expressed his desire to remain in the format, particularly after increasing his fitness. Even so, he wanted to keep going, especially after improving his physical condition. The Indian Express cited a source as stating, “The selectors have left the ball in Sharma’s court to decide his future.”
The source claims that during the England trip, Rohit Sharma also spoke with a few BCCI officials and voiced his displeasure with the choice. The seasoned opener has struggled for runs in the current ODI series against England, scoring 11 and 26, the latter of which came off 47 deliveries.
