AB de Villiers claims that India’s head coach, Gautam Gambhir, needs to take accountability for the team’s back-to-back T20 series defeats to England and Ireland and lead them back to triumph in the shortest format.
The former South African captain said that the three-time T20 World Cup winners would learn from their 0-2 loss to Ireland and their 0-4 loss to England. He urged Gambhir to bring the players “down to earth” once more after they had been accustomed to scoring a tonne of runs in the IPL. De Villiers went on, “Indian batters will need to bat according to situations at the international level instead of playing purely aggressive cricket as they do in the lucrative league.”
“There are many things to be concerned about. Gautam Gambhir will be the target of many eyes and fingers. He must assume responsibility and leadership for the team’s future. He has all the necessary qualifications. Perhaps receiving a little wake-up call wasn’t all that horrible. On his YouTube channel, de Villiers said, “Bring those players who have scored so many runs in the IPL a little bit down to earth again.”
“Let them know that there is no more vulnerability in international cricket. There are usually one or two bowlers in the IPL that you believe you can score against. You need more than one or two gears because there is nowhere to hide in international cricket. He went on, “You can’t always bat in the fifth gear.”
Even while players like Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi were smashing runs for fun in the IPL, their batting efforts against England were dreadful.

Former cricket player and analyst De Villiers said it was tough to watch India lose four games in the five-match series against England, but he wasn’t surprised because the Shreyas Iyer-led team lacked experience. De Villiers believes that going forward, India’s leadership will be essential in the shortest format.
“Watching India lose 4-0 was difficult. I didn’t anticipate that. That’s the word that comes to mind, but it’s also not entirely surprising given the lack of experience. The importance of the leadership increases. I am aware that many people are blaming Gautam Gambhir. It’s not just him. He has a major part to play. However, you’ll need to be patient with that team’s composition,” de Villiers added.
