Before England’s second match of the three-match series against India at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff on Thursday, July 16, captain Harry Brook has welcomed the idea of having Brydon Carse back in the One Day International (ODI) lineup.
Carse last played for the Three Lions in the 2025–26 Ashes series, where he finished as his team’s top wicket-taker with 22 wickets at an average of 30.31. However, the right-arm fast bowler suffered wrist and elbow ailments while playing for the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League.
Carse’s return excites Harry Brook because of his dedication to the squad.
Additionally, the captain disclosed that the fast bowler is eligible for selection starting in the second ODI, which will significantly improve England’s bowling performance, especially in the middle overs.
Only in the T20 Blast earlier this month did the 30-year-old make a comeback to professional cricket. Carse took five wickets during his three appearances for Durham in the domestic T20 competition. This included a 2 for 28 stint at Chester-le-Street versus Derbyshire.
Carse would have given England a another seam-bowling option if he had taken Liam Dawson’s spot in the starting lineup. But in the first ODI, the Hampshire all-rounder demonstrated his batting talent by hitting a crucial 68 and partnering with Joe Root for 121 runs for the seventh wicket. Even though England ultimately lost, Dawson was instrumental in helping his team reach a competitive total.
